THE AREA - what to do
There are dozens of stunning scenic hiking and walking routes in all directions, starting right from the villa.
- The Bran Castle or "Castle of Count Dracula" - within walking distance.
- Biking through the magnificent Bucegi National Park, starting at about 2 km from the villa and connected to it by the main village road.
- The location of the spectacular Hollywood film "Cold Mountain" (10km).
- The ski resort of Poiana Braşov (the best in the country) is about 15 km away.
- A smaller ski slope with a ski lift is up the road from the villa, towards the Bucegi National Park.
- The town of Râşnov (between Bran and Braşov), founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century. Râşnov’s large and recently renovated fortress (today a museum) is a recommended tourist site. The hilltop fortress offers fantastic panoramic views of the historic Bârsa County, flanked from all sides by mountain chains.
- The city of Braşov (28 km) with its excellently preserved old city is historically the richest Saxon city in Transylvania. It offers great walks along the city’s picturesque streets, unforgettable organ concerts in the towering 600 years old Black Church, museums, theater, cinemas, pastry shops to die for and if you insist, shopping malls, pedestrianized shopping streets and large supermarkets. Hard to believe you will ever be tired of our “chef’s” cooking, but if so, beside a few traditional restaurants in the village itself, some very good restaurants are waiting for you in Braşov.
- Sighişoara boasts one of the greatest medieval cityscapes in the world. Its walled upper city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the perfect destination for a one-day trip.
- Sinaia (a scenic 50 km ride from Bran), “the Pearl of the Carpathians”, was chosen by Romania’s first king as the site for his summer residence: Peleş Castle. Visiting this opulent Bavarian-style palace is a must. A cable car can take you from Sinaia or from the neighboring resort of Buşteni to the 2500m high mountains dominating the area. From there, the very fit can hike down the mountain to Bran.
- Sibiu (165 km from Bran), one of the oldest Saxon cities of Transylvania, managed to preserve much of its medieval charme until this day. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 and European Capital of Culture 2007, it awaits you with a large array of sightseeing and cultural highlights.
